A headboard that folds forward

The wings are not decoration. A headboard that turns forward at the ends encloses the head of the bed slightly, which changes how the bed feels in a large room: it makes its own alcove instead of floating against a wall. In a small room the same detail can crowd the bedside tables, so the wall width matters more here than with a flat headboard.

The fold is soft rather than sharp, which is what keeps the bed from reading as a piece of hotel furniture. Fabric and leather are both available, and this family is worth ordering with removable covers: wings are exactly where a headboard is touched.
