A headboard made of cushions
Two maxi cushions instead of a padded panel changes the bed in a practical way. Cushions can be plumped, moved, and sat up against at any angle, so the bed works for reading without a separate pile of pillows. A fixed panel looks tidier and supports worse.
It also makes the bed easier to live with over years. A cushion cover comes off and is cleaned or replaced; a panel is reupholstered by a specialist or lived with. In a bedroom that gets daily use, that difference shows up long before the frame wears out.
